Here are the improvements we made to Philip's resume:

Layout

We selected a layout that was uncluttered, and would capture the eye of any hiring manager.

A compelling summary of Philip's experience, achievements and skills would entice the employer to read the rest of the document in greater detail.

We also emphasised Philip's name with an attention-grabbing design.

Personal particulars were located at the sides, neatly separated from his qualifications.

The order of appearance of the sections was revised, to showcase the more important and relevant details first.

We skillfully used bold effects, lines, bullets, font sizes, italics and capital letters to highlight the more important details of each section.

Details

Philip had omitted his address from his personal particulars, thinking that an email and mobile number would suffice. But an address is extremely important as most companies inform candidates of their interview results formally by mail.

The dates were aligned to the right, in an orderly fashion that makes the flow of his experiences and qualifications much easier to follow.

The consistency of font types, use of capital letters, alignments and bullets was maintained, unlike the original.

Content

The original two-page resume was condensed into a more concised single page. Resumes should not exceed two pages generally.

We omitted irrelevant information, going straight to the point to show the employer what Philip could do for them. We intentionally excluded details which were more appropriate for the cover letter/ interview.

We substantiated the accomplishments with measurable results like the amount of cost savings achieved, obtained through focused questions in our fact-finding process.

More concise sentence structures and action verbs were used to create a stronger impact.

Commonly understood technical abbreviations were used to indicate Philip's level of technical sophistication.

Correct usage of past and present tenses.

Philip had omitted some relevant information regarding previous experiences and awards. Our comprehensive Questionnaire helped him recall them, allowing us to further elaborate on his accomplishments.

Initially, I had my doubts that anyone could improve on my resume. After all, I know myself best, and I am highly educated, with a reasonable command of English. But it turned out that such a job was better left to the professionals. I was quite amazed at the design, marketing and writing techniques that Career Investment employed, to create an end product that I am truly proud of. What surprised me most was how they managed to do more with less - the new 1-page resume creates more impact than my previous 2-page one! I had always thought that a longer resume was a better resume.
